Semiconductor Electronics

The chapter that hides behind every modern electronic device — and shows up as a direct-recall JEE question.

Concept overview

Semiconductors have electrical conductivity between conductors and insulators. Their band structure has a small gap (~1.1 eV for silicon) between the filled valence band and the empty conduction band. Thermally-excited electrons cross the gap, creating conducting electrons and holes (missing electron states in the valence band).

Doping increases conductivity dramatically. n-type semiconductors are doped with pentavalent impurities (P, As) that donate free electrons. p-type are doped with trivalent impurities (B, Al) that create holes. At room temperature, dopant atoms are essentially all ionised and dominate the carrier count.

A p-n junction — a boundary between p- and n-type regions — has a built-in electric field that opposes further diffusion. Forward biasing (p side positive) lowers the barrier and allows large current. Reverse biasing raises the barrier and only a tiny leakage current flows. This asymmetry is the diode's rectifying property.

Transistors are three-region devices (npn or pnp) where a small base current controls a large collector current. In the active mode I_C = β I_B, where β is the current gain (typically 10–500). Transistors are the basis of digital logic — combining n-type and p-type in specific ways builds NAND, NOR, AND, OR gates. NAND alone is functionally complete: any Boolean function can be built from NAND gates.

Key formulas & concepts

  • Band gap (silicon): E_g ≈ 1.1 eV
  • n-type: Pentavalent dopant → majority carriers are electrons
  • p-type: Trivalent dopant → majority carriers are holes
  • Diode forward voltage: V_f ≈ 0.7 V (Si), 0.3 V (Ge)
  • Transistor current gain: β = I_C / I_B (active mode)
  • Ic-Ib relation: I_C = β I_B; I_E = I_C + I_B
  • NAND (universal gate): any Boolean function realisable from NAND alone

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating semiconductors like metals — semiconductor conductivity increases with temperature (more carriers thermally excited); metal conductivity decreases (more phonon scattering).
  • Ignoring the 0.7 V forward drop of a Si diode — in DC circuit calculations this offset matters.
  • Confusing majority and minority carriers — in n-type both electrons (majority) and holes (minority) exist.
  • Applying I_C = β I_B in the saturation region — that formula holds only in the active region.

JEE Main relevance

JEE Main asks 1–2 semiconductor questions every paper — usually one direct-recall on doping / band diagram and one logic-gate identification or diode rectification numerical.

JEE Advanced relevance

Advanced problems combine diode I-V characteristics with resistor networks (load-line analysis) or ask about transistor amplifier gain. Full-wave rectifier ripple factor is another standard Advanced pattern.

Previous-year questions (PYQ)

Semiconductor PYQs are heavy on direct-recall. A single evening of focused memorisation covers most JEE Main archetypes.
